A Typical Weekend

Friday evening: The classes gather at 6:45 p.m. for refreshments and fore-contact. The two-hour session begins at 7 p.m., with a short break in the middle. This session includes centering and warm-up, demonstrations, exercises, some administrative discussion, and other practical grounds for developing the theoretical issues of the weekend. The intention for the evening is to develop the experience upon which the formal theory rests.

Saturday morning: Coffee is served for gathering time, from 9 to 9:30 a.m. The session meets from 9:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. for theory presentation, with a break in the middle. This session is most directed toward formal theory discussion and holds the most concerted didactic aspects of the training, including attention to the reading assignments.

Saturday afternoon: The practicum begins promptly at 2 p.m. and lasts until 5 p.m. Trainees divide themselves into triads and quartets. One person is the therapist, one is the client, and one (or two) is the observer. The typical therapy session lasts 15 to 20 minutes, though some are as short as 10 minutes and some as long as 40. The remainder of the time is taken up with commentary by the observer and by the trainers. There are usually three, hour-long segments, so each triad member can have a turn working as a therapist. A short break is usually held after the second session.

Sunday morning and afternoon: Gathering and coffee time is again from 9 to 9:30 a.m. There are two sessions on Sunday - one from 9:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. and another from 2 until 5 p.m., with breaks during each. These sessions are devoted to experiential groups in which the trainees work with the trainers on their own issues. Trainees are encouraged to query the trainer about the theory involved in the work that was done. This segment gives the trainees additional experience observing the work of a seasoned Gestalt therapist and connecting theory to practice.

Once a training year, part of Sunday is devoted to assessment, feedback, and evaluation.
